All things Bennetts and Coffee...

Welcome to the August edition of our coffee newsletter!

This month is full of noteworthy social campaigns and industry information as we bring you the latest insights from our Market Report, share progress on this year’s CaféSmart initiative, and reveal more details about our upcoming Grounds for Health auction — including how you can take part. Plus, we’re celebrating an incredible achievement from our very own QC and roaster extraordinaire, Jason;  read on to find out more!

So, sit back, pour yourself a fresh brew, and enjoy everything we’ve packed into this month’s edition.

MARKET REPORT

If any of these terms in the market report are confusing, we urge you to use Investopedia to make sense of them. We have found it to be a brilliant tool when learning about all things trading, futures and currency.

The past month has been mixed, with the September terminal starting July at 298.40 USC/lb and ending at 294.10 USC/lb. The monthly range reached 33.25 USC/lb, with several volatile sessions showing daily swings of 8–12 USC/lb.

While Brazil’s harvest continues, much of the market’s focus has shifted to the U.S. and the unfolding tariff situation. As of August 6, a 50% tariff has been imposed on all Brazilian exports. The full impact on coffee remains unclear, but given Brazil is the largest coffee producer and the U.S. the largest consumer, this development will undoubtedly affect farmers, importers, and roasters.

Historically, this U.S. administration has used aggressive tariffs as leverage to secure favourable trade deals, later reducing them to more “reasonable” levels once negotiations conclude. With many Brazilian producers still well-capitalised from strong recent seasons, there appears to be little immediate pressure to cut prices. They can afford to wait, particularly as U.S. demand cannot be met by alternative origins at current supply levels.

As we move into August, the market faces yet another period of uncertainty. The key question is whether a deal can be reached quickly or if these tariffs will begin to force selling pressure on Brazilian farmers and exporters in the weeks ahead.

THE BENNETTS X GROUNDS FOR HEALTH AUCTION IS NOW LIVE!

We’re incredibly proud to share that our Grounds for Health Charity Auction is officially open, running from 9am on Tuesday 27th August to 5pm Wednesday 28th August (AEST). This is your opportunity to secure two outstanding coffees while directly contributing to life-saving healthcare in coffee-producing communities.

On offer are two exceptional lots:

🔸 Colombia Laurina Natural – a rare 12kg microlot from the renowned Café Granja La Esperanza, a name synonymous with innovation and excellence in specialty coffee.

🔸 Organic Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Gr2 – a 60kg bag from the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), showcasing the classic bright, floral cup profile the region is known for.

Whether you're looking to secure something unique for your next offering or simply want to give back through coffee, this is a meaningful way to do both. You can place a bid on one or both lots—whatever suits your roasting needs and budget.

Most importantly, 100% of proceeds will go directly to Grounds for Health, a non-profit organisation that delivers cervical cancer screenings, early treatment, and health system support for women in key coffee-growing regions.

This year, your support is more critical than ever. Due to a global USAID funding freeze, Grounds for Health is currently the only partner offering HPV testing to women in Ethiopia—a devastating reality for the communities affected, but also a powerful reminder of the coffee industry’s ability to step up when it matters most.

By taking part in this auction, you’re not just bidding on incredible coffee—you’re helping build stronger, healthier communities at origin.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT

From the 4th to the 17th of August, we’re celebrating Fairtrade Fortnight—two weeks dedicated to spotlighting the people and stories behind Fairtrade products. Across the globe, individuals, businesses, and organisations come together during this time to champion fair trade and raise awareness of the real impact it has on producers and their communities.

Fairtrade Certification is more than just a label—it’s a vital mechanism that ensures producers, especially those in economically disadvantaged regions, receive fair prices for their goods. This enables them to earn a sustainable income, invest in their communities, and build a better future. The Fairtrade system also upholds strict social, economic, and environmental standards, promoting improved working conditions, gender equality, and access to essential services like education and healthcare.

Why Fairtrade Matters Now More Than Ever
In 2025, Fairtrade Fortnight draws important attention to the role fair pricing plays in building resilience. With farmers around the world facing intensifying climate pressures, fluctuating market conditions, and rising production costs, Fairtrade continues to offer a crucial safety net. Through guaranteed minimum prices, community development premiums, and support for climate adaptation projects, the system helps farming communities withstand challenges and plan for the future.

Choosing Fairtrade means choosing fairness, sustainability, and transparency. It’s a simple yet powerful way to support the people behind the products we enjoy—while contributing to a more equitable global trading system.

Bennetts’ Commitment to Fairtrade
At Bennetts, ethical sourcing has always been at the heart of what we do. We’re proud to offer a broad selection of Fairtrade-certified coffees that align with our values and help drive positive change across the supply chain.

Throughout Fairtrade Fortnight, we’ll be sharing more about these coffees and the producers behind them. Keep an eye on our social media channels as we highlight the communities your coffee supports—and the real difference your choices make.

JASON - V60 BREWERS CUP WINNER

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from the competition stage—our very own Jason has claimed first place at the 2025 Australian Hario V60 Championships!

Held last Thursday, 31st of July, the event brought together skilled brewers from across the country, all showcasing their precision, technique, and passion for coffee. Jason’s performance was nothing short of outstanding, and we couldn’t be prouder to have him in the Bennetts team.

This win isn’t just a personal triumph—it’s a testament to Jason’s dedication, curiosity, and deep understanding of coffee. His journey now continues on the global stage, as he prepares to head to Japan in September to compete at the 2025 Hario V60 Brewers Cup World Competition. We’ll be cheering him on every step of the way!

Congratulations again, Jason—what an incredible achievement!

CAFÉ SMART UPDATE

CaféSmart Week is officially underway! Running from the 2nd to the 8th of August, this annual campaign brings together Australia’s coffee community — including roasters, cafés, and coffee lovers — to take action against homelessness and support grassroots organisations making a real difference in local communities. Throughout the week, roasters are activating their wholesale networks and spreading the word, while cafés are stepping up as social impact champions by raising awareness and fundraising in-store.

The highlight of the campaign is Friday the 8th of August, when participating cafés across the country will donate $1 from every coffee sold. It’s a simple and powerful way to give back — so if you’re grabbing your morning brew that day, consider heading to a CaféSmart café and helping support the people and services that need it most.

Can’t make it to a café? You can still be part of the movement by donating online. Every contribution goes directly toward funding vital local services for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

To learn more, donate, or find a participating venue near you, head to
